Suresh Gopi is an actor, singer, and politician known for his incredible talent. He was elected Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas in June 2024. He also represented the Malayalam film industry. Besides Malayalam cinema, he has participated in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Bollywood. He won many awards and recognition. 

Early Life 

Suresh Gopi was born on 26 June 1958 in Alappuzha, Kerala. His parents are K. Gopinathan Pillai, a film distributor, and V. Gnanalekshmi Amma. He was the eldest son of the family. Due to his acting background, his interest in entertainment has grown. Gopi has three brothers: Subhash Gopi and twin brothers Sunil and Sanil Gopi. 

Moreover, his family raised him in Kollam, and he completed his education there. He studied at Jesus Anglo-Indian School for schooling. Then, he completed his Fatima Mata National College degree. He pursued a BSc in zoology and an MSc in English literature. Then, after completing his education, he focused on his acting career. 

Personal Life

Suresh Gopi married Radhika Nair on 9 February 1990. They had five children: Lakshmi Suresh, Gokul Suresh, Bhagya Suresh, Bhavni Suresh, and Madhav Suresh. Lakshmi Suresh was the eldest daughter; she died in a car accident at the age of one and a half. He lives with his family in Sasthamangalam, Thiruvananthapuram. However, their son, Gokul Suresh, is a young actor. 

Acting Career of Suresh Gopi

Suresh Gopi made his debut in 1965 with Odayil Ninnu. However, he had a small role and played a child artist. After a long gap, in 1986, he played a role in Niramulla Raavukal. He kept playing the roles of antagonist and supporting. Irupatham Noottandu (1987) became one of the blockbuster movies. He played the role of the villain in the movie. 

Moreover, he played lead roles in movies and gave back-to-back blockbuster movies. Because of his dialogue delivery, he mostly played the role of police in movies. As commissioner (1994), he delivered dialogues that created a storm among fans. The movie also became popular in neighbouring states. It was also successful at the box office. 

In Lelam (1997), he became popular for his role as Anakkattil Chackochi. The movie becomes one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. Later, in Kaliyattam (1997), he played the role of Kannan Perumalayan. For the role, he won the National Film Award for Best Actor and also the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor. 

Then, during the 2000s, his acting career gradually deteriorated. None of his movies hit a blockbuster. After a long time, in 2007, Nadiya Kollappetta Rathri became a popular movie. After My God (2015), he has taken a four-year break. 

Comeback after break

Suresh Gopi returned in 2019 with the Tamil film Thamilarasan. The release date has to delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In Malayam Cinema, he made his comeback with Varane Avashyamund in 2020. The movie becomes successful with a high margin. Then he kept making movies and hitting blockbusters. 

Political Career of Suresh Gopi

His interest in politics developed during college. He was a Students’ Federation of India (SFI) member. Later, he admired Indira Gandhi and followed her path. On April 29, 2016, the President of India appointed him to the Indian Parliament’s upper house, the Rajya Sabha. He also became popular for his contributions as a citizen. It was outlined in Article 80 of the Indian Constitution. 

From 2019 to 2022, he was a member of the Consultative Committee for the Minister of Tribal Affairs and Coconut Development Board. Moreover, in 2016, he joined the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). He participated in the 2019 Indian general election in Kerala but lost. In 2021, he participated in the Kerala Legislative Assembly election and again lost. 

In March 2024, he again participated in the Lok Sabha Election as a BJP Candidate. He won the seat with more than 74,000 votes. He became the first BJP Loka Sabha MP from Kerala. Moreover, he was appointed Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas. He also is a Minister of State for Tourism. 

Along with his political career, he promised to keep releasing movies. He will maintain a balance of acting and political career. Recently, his movie released Maniyan Chittappan. It is the first movie after winning the election. He joined Ganaganchari Universe with director Arun Chandu.
